Many of you know that I spend my summers in Alaska and my winters somewhere in the SW United States (Lower 48). This past year I spent it in Arizona, that may change next year, haven't thought that far ahead yet....

Anyway, I decided a change in my Alaska routine was in order, getting older and you have to start checking things off the old bucket list! So I secured a job as a boat Captain on a River safari Jet Boat near Denali National Park in Central Alaska. Quite a different deal from my years at the fishing Lodge in SE Alaska, but still a damn old boat driver. With no Lodge to stay in up here I decided the best thing to do was drive up with my small 5th wheel and spend the summer in it, on the grounds of where I am working. Now to some, that may not sound like a big deal, accept when I made the decision I was over 4000 miles from my destination and a good part of that was on the Alaskan Highway (ALCAN), we have all heard horror stories of people making that trip, but I was pumped and excited to give it a whirl. So on April 9th I left Arizona and started North with a couple planned stops...one in Salt lake City to see some friends and another stop in Kalispell Montana for a little truck work and rest before the ALCAN!

My Kalispell stopped was planned at my good friend and forum member Jim Flinchbaughs, for good reason, he is by far one of the best mechanics in Montana and as it turned out my truck needed some major front end work...like new shocks, new hub and bearing, new ball joints and both inner and outer tie rod ends....nothing Flinchbaugh couldn't make quick work of! I left his place on about the 19th of April and headed towards the cold frozen North, one thing about traveling the Alaskan Highway, things don't get opened up until after Memorial Day so it was a cold and lonely trip through some very sparse country side, but beautiful.

Weather played havoc with me a couple times and first day out had another truck repair to make - Alternator went out in Red Deer, Alberta. Quick fix a one day delay and on the road I went.

But this is a photo forum so the story in pictures is better....

Here is my arrival in Big Sky Country - Montana
I arrived in Cantwell Alaska on May 9th and got settled in at the camp and started work the very next day. Have managed to see quite a few Caribou and hope to see many more animals over the summer.
These last two shots are from today, hoping it warms up soon and the river thaws so we can begin to run the boats, latest spring in over 60 years, of course the year I decide to come up here!

Posting the photo of the buck earlier tonight got me in the mood for posting one from the archives.

This shot certainly demonstrates what one can accomplish with a careful and steady aim while handholding the 300mm+EC20. Tack sharp - you can see every hair as well as the detail in the flies on the deer's forehead, especially viewing here on the home screen in full rez (which is far superior to the downsized image that I uploaded and is currently displayed on the web). What makes it pretty cool is that I shot this at a focal length equivalent to 1200mm at only 1/40sec(!) since dusk was rapidly falling and the aperture setting on the E-5 had somehow slipped to f/11. Oly IBIS rocks!

There seems to be a great abundance of deer out and about this spring. Here's an example of a young buck charging along the top of a ridgeline of last year's weathered corn stubble on the outskirts of Shorthills Provincial Park. Colour of the light was just so-so that evening, and the unkempt remnants of the deer's winter coat don't particularly add to the photo IMHO. Still, I really like the pose he struck for me as he disappeared over the top of the ridge.

I have decided to send my 7-14mm F4 lens into Olympus to be repaired, after the aperture stuck at it's smallest opening :(

When I had my 50-200mm F2.8 repaired, it went to Hauppauge for repair. I have just filled out the paperwork from the link that Olympus e-mailed, and it tells
me to send the lens to El Paso TX?

I thought that all repairs were now being done in Hauppauge, but maybe they send certain lenses to the Texas repair facility?

Would hate to send it to El Paso by mistake LOL

Flash / Strobe Topics FL-50 Question

I know this is a stupid question for someone who has used my FL-50 flashes as far back as when I first got my E-1 then on my E-3 and now on my E-5, but I swear I was able to set the flash to "Manual" and then adjust the power levels in fractions of full power such as 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, etc. I just set up my flash on my E-5 and can't figure out how to set the power levels in fractions of full power. What I see now is guide numbers and distance in feet instead of fractions of power.

What am I missing?

I should point out I normally use studio strobes and haven't used my FL-50 for a long time.

Note: I have been searching the internet for an answer to this question and found a note here http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/43/fl-36.html which indicates there is a setting to select between "Guide Number" or "Fractional Output" on the display, but I haven't been able to find where this setting is on my FL-50.

Considering buying an Acratech ballhead, either a GP or GV2 (would also get a leveling quick release clamp to use with either head, plus appropriate camera and lens plates).

Does anyone have any comments about using these heads with the E-5 and/or E-M5? My heaviest combo will be the E-5, 50-200 SWD, and EC-14.

Many thanks for whatever information you can share.
